Land excursions that will delight be that special walks with wildlife photo opportunities, castle visits or distilleries. Meeting the locals is very much part of the experience to understand the history and culture of our islands and to partake in a ceilidh or two.
Highland Lassie welcomes you aboard at approx. 4 pm for a champagne reception, time to explore the boat before your welcome dinner.
Sailing away from Oban, Dunstaffnage Castle in plain view, we head toward Castle Stalker where we will learn the intrigues of her history before heading off north upon Loch Linnhe to anchor for the night in Loch Leven.
After breakfast, we take a land excursion to Glencoe Visitors Centre and find out about a bloody Scottish family squabble! We then set sail heading north again into Loch Linnhe onward to Corpach where we rest for the night.
The morning brings the excitement of climbing Neptune’s Staircase, an impressing feat of engineering by Thomas Telford, a flight of 8 locks. Once on the top in Banavie we will enjoy an excursion, when Queen Victoria visited Inverlochy Castle she wrote in her diary that she had never seen a lovelier or more romantic spot, today the same applies. Later in the day, we travel along the Caledonian Canal to berth in Gairlochy for the night.
The morning excursion takes us to the Clan Cameron Museum & the Witch’s Pool. We will show you the cave where Bonny Prince Charlie hid to avoid capture by the English troops after the defeat at Culloden. Re-joining the boat, we head into Loch Lochy, go through Laggan locks and experience the tranquil and majestic avenue of trees before heading into Loch Oich, spending the night in Fort Augustus.
After a wee exploration of the quaint village of Fort Augustus, we travel down the flight of 5 locks into the famous Loch Ness, binoculars at the ready for that elusive Loch Ness Monster, our Nessie. We will linger awhile below Urquhart Castle and learn of its long and varied history before heading toward our berth place for the evening and Highland Lassie’s home for the next 7 months, the pretty little village of Dochgarroch where we will partake of our farewell dinner – (handkerchiefs provided!)
Departure after breakfast, approx. 11am.
